I knew I wasn’t going to sleep well, not when

tomorrow night I would be on a plane that would

take me an ocean away from him. He looked like

he didn’t have a worry while he slept.

Unconsciously, he rolled over to face me.

I studied his face, trying my hardest to commit

him to memory. Forever was a long time. He

licked his plump lips as he shifted. I didn’t touch

him like I wanted, worried I would startle him

from his slumber.

His eyelashes fluttered, and he moaned. He

let out a soft grunt as he brushed his hand over his

face. He smiled. “Whatcha doin’?”

“Watching you,” I said.

He groaned. “’Cause that’s not creepy,” he

said and cocked his eyebrow.

I poked him in the shoulder. “I don’t want to

waste a minute I could be with you.”

He yawned and reached down to scratch his

stomach. “I guess that’s okay,” he said with a grin.

He wiggled closer, adjusting his pillow under his

head. “You’re warm. It’s like you’re a furnace.”

I scooted closer to him and wrapped my arm

around him. He smelled good, and I dropped a kiss

on his forehead.

He let out a satisfied sigh as he burrowed his

cheek into my chest. “Go to sleep, Bradley. We’ll

have lots of time tomorrow to spend together.”

I listened to him, because in my dreams I

wasn’t leaving the next day. We lived in a world

where I wasn’t a government agent, and Tony was

a law-abiding citizen. If only my wish could come

true.

Chapter Ten

The morning mood around us was so dark you

would have thought it was our last meal before

facing the firing squad. If I ever got a chance to

choose my final meal, it wouldn’t be cornflakes.

I’d want a full English breakfast at least.

“I’ll drive you to the airport,” Tony said.

His dull tone made me ache for what we

couldn’t have. “Thank you,” I said. “At least I get

one more ride in that gorgeous car of yours.”

“If I had known that was the way to a man’s

heart, I would have bought one a while ago. And

here I’ve been perfecting my cooking,” he said in

mock anger.

I smiled, even though he still appeared to be

sad. “Hey,” I said, reaching across the table. “I’ll

write.”

“Maybe one day you can come back to visit?”

My heart cracked. If everything went well and

he didn’t want to kill me for being part of this plan

with the con artists, I could possibly visit.

“Maybe,” I said. I closed my eyes and wished for

the impossible. I wished we could be two men free

to be together.

We’d spent most of the morning holding each

other, not speaking but just enjoying the closeness

we would miss once I left. In his arms, I was

warm, his strength surrounding me and keeping the

world at bay a few minutes longer.

As I was thinking, he placed his hand inside

mine. Even though he was a criminal and I was

about to steal from him, I still found it hard to

leave our haven here.

We both heard the ding as someone stepped

off the elevator. Tony frowned. “Who’s that?” he

asked aloud but more to himself. He stood and

walked toward the foyer. I put down my spoon and

followed him.
